Homeowner Spring Safety Tips

By: Fry | Goehring

We associate spring with the time of year to clean, organize, and spruce up our homes a little bit. But why not take that a step further and make sure that your home is safe for you, your family, and anyone who may visit your home in the future?

Here are a few spring safety tips to implement in your own home:

CHECK YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives every single day, so it’s important to make sure that they’re in good working order, and that they have plenty of battery life. If you notice a problem with either one, be sure to call a handyman to troubleshoot right away to ensure your safety from smoke and fire.

CHECK YOUR DOOR LOCKS

Winter can wreak a lot of havoc on your doors, windows, and even your locks. If your locks have been sticking, or if they aren’t latching as good as they once were, call a locksmith to see if they can be repaired or replace the locks with a completely new system. The main idea is that you want to be sure that your door locks are strong and can deter any would-be burglars from entering your home.

CHECK THE RAILINGS

The stairs are one of the most dangerous spots in your house, which is why it’s crucial to check on the railings periodically to make sure that they’re sturdy. If you have children in the house, you also need to check the width between the banisters and install any childproofing as necessary.

In addition to making sure the railings and steps themselves are safe, you also need to check that the stairs are well lit so that anyone using them can see clearly. Ideally, there would be an easily accessible light switch at the top of the stairs and at the bottom.

CHECK FOR ROOF DAMAGE

Long winters can potentially do some damage to your roof, especially if you live in an area that has a lot of ice and snow. Have a professional examine your roof to make sure there’s no damage to the shingles or potential for leakage. A damaged roof can be an increased risk for a fire, water damage, mold problems, and more, so it’s best not to put it off.

When we’re at home, we must control and take care of our environment as much as we possibly can so that we can prevent injuries and accidents from happening to those who live inside the house as well as everyone who visits.

If, however, you have been severely injured at someone else’s house due to their negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses or lost wages. Click here for more information about Randy E. Fry, a personal injury attorney in Georgia.
