Labor Day is the mark of the end of summer and is often combined with a huge celebration with family, friends, and a lot of food. Many families choose to head to the local park and rent a space so that they can properly celebrate the holiday by grilling out and playing a few games.
While Labor Day is a fun-filled, sunny holiday—there can also be a lot to watch out for in the way of drunk drivers, grilling accidents, and sustaining injuries at the park.

Watch Out for Drunk Drivers
Many choose Labor Day weekend to have big get-togethers with their friends and family, which may likely include a lot of alcohol. There is a reason why you see an increased presence of police and highway patrol out on the roads during this weekend. It’s not just your imagination–there is an increased risk for drunk drivers out on the roads during a holiday weekend, especially if you’re headed home at night.
One of the best ways to protect yourself is to make sure that you get home before sunset and to make sure your driver is completely sober before you head home. Although Memorial Day is traditionally the most dangerous driving holiday, you should still be extra cautious on the roads during Labor Day weekend.
Grill Safety
Grilling is a big feature of many Labor Day celebrations, and many families choose to center their entire day on what time the meal will be ready. Before you start cooking, always remember these basic safety rules from the National Fire Protection Association:
- Only grill outside.
- Keep kids and pets away from the grill area.
- Keep the grill free of grease.
- If using a propane grill, regularly test for leaks.
- Never leave the grill unattended.
If you are grilling on a propane grill, you’ll want to check all the connections before using. Do NOT turn the gas on while the lid is closed. This can cause gas buildup and the cover could blow off and cause severe injuries or burns. If you smell gas while cooking, turn off the gas immediately to avoid an accident.
Be Careful on Playground Equipment
If you choose to head to a park on Labor Day with your family, the first thing your kids will want to do is to head immediately to the playground equipment. Be cautious, however, in making sure that none of the equipment has inadequate guardrails, trip hazards, or sharp edges that can injure children.
