Father’s Day is coming up on June 17, and it’s time to buy dear old dad something that really shows him we care. One of the go-to gifts for any dad a shiny new grill so he can spend hours each summer doing something he loves: Showing off his barbecue chops for the whole neighborhood to see.
You know you want to buy your dad an upgrade from the grill he’s already got, and you have a list of features you’d really love to see, but have you taken safety into consideration? According to the National Fire Prevention Association, grilling accidents accounted for at least 16,900 emergency room visits for severe burn injuries in 2012. When you go shopping for your Father’s Day gift, be sure you’re looking for a safe grill, not just one that has all the bells and whistles that you want.
Here’s a quick guide to picking a safe grill for Father’s Day this year.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SAFE GRILL
With so many products on the market, it can be difficult to decide what to choose (and how to find the safest option). Generally, you want to look for quality construction, a good grill manufacturer warranty, and ensure that (if buying gas) that the gas grill burner is of proportional size for the grill. Experts also recommend that your flame taming devices directly cover the entire burner (as opposed to having the flame tamers on the side like some grills have).
Check the grill over for any imperfections or rust—this is especially important if you are planning on buying a grill on an online marketplace.
ALWAYS REMEMBER THESE BASIC SAFETY RULES BEFORE YOU GRILL
Once you have a grill picked, your dad is undoubtedly going to want to bust it out right away. Before he does, always remember these basic safety rules from the National Fire Protection Association:
- Only grill outside.
- Keep kids and pets away from the grill area.
- Keep the grill free of grease.
- If using a propane grill, regularly test for leaks.
- Never leave the grill unattended.
If you are grilling on a propane grill, you’ll want to check all the connections before using. Do NOT turn the gas on while the lid is closed. This can cause gas buildup and the cover could blow off and cause severe injuries or burns. If you smell gas while cooking, turn off the gas immediately to avoid an accident.
