What to Do When Companies Sell Contaminated Food

By: Fry | Goehring

The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reports that 1 in 6 Americans each year become ill from contaminated food ingestion.

According to the Georgia Poison Center:

“Food poisoning/foodborne illness occurs when food contaminated by bacteria, parasite, or virus is eaten. Symptoms include upset stomach, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and dehydration.”

CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF FOOD CONTAMINATION

Common food sources include improperly packaged products, undercooked meats or poultry, and improper handling of food products. Contaminated food sold in stores can cause widespread food poisoning from bacteria or parasite ingestion.

Salmonella, E. coli, and listeria are just a few examples of harmful bacteria that are spread through contaminated foods. Viruses such as Hepatitis A and Norwalk virus are also common food contaminants. Some food poisoning symptoms can be severe, requiring hospitalization. Extreme cases can even be fatal.
