Boating And Water Accidents Are Also Considered Personal Injury

By: Fry | Goehring

As the son of a 2-Star Navy Admiral, I grew up taking many family trips that involved the ocean and water due to my Dad’s Navy career. For many years as a child and teenager during the summer months, while Dad was involved in various Navy training exercises, our family would tag along and play while Dad performed his duties.

Some of the many places that we enjoyed were Annapolis, Maryland; Norfolk, Virginia; Jacksonville, Florida and San Diego, California. We also often took many family vacations to the beaches of Florida.

As an adult, I find some of my favorite memories revolved around the water and oceans, and to this day I enjoy spending time with friends in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where this picture was taken.

Though water activities can provide great memories, they can also turn bad when accidents happen. Boating, swimming, jet-ski, and drowning injuries often occur because there are oftentimes very lax boating regulations and even less required standardized education.

In past years, the U.S. Coast Guard reported that 86 percent of boating accident fatalities occurred involving boats where the driver had not received boating safety instruction.

Also, boater fatigue is one example of the dangerous conditions that occur on the waters. This common condition affects boaters who have been on the water for long periods of time. Their reflexes may be slowed due to overexposure to the wind and sun – having almost the same effect as alcohol.
